FAIRBURNS.

+ (Own Correspondent)

Messrs H. Parker, R. B. Coulter, and J. Tracey have, with their teams, completed some seven chains of formation work on Duncan’s Road, just past the Church. On making further enquiries regarding this work, I find that these settlers have done it absolutely gratis. Now, as this road carries a good deal of traffic and both cream waggons traversing it daily, I would urge Cr. Pearson, in conjunction with our new engineer, Mr. Bray, to visit this portion of the road and see if something could be done by way of metalling, which would not only compensate those who did the work, but would be a distinct benefit to all settlers on this road. The School Committee are indebted to Messrs H. D. Foster, H. Parker, H. A. Morey, T. J. Coulter, J. P. Coulter and Stephen Brown, who worked most assiduously to complete the erection ot the flag pole in time for the Minister for Education’s visit. Mr. Brown, who has been connected with the ship-building trade for many years, acted as overseer, and a pole which was a credit to the district was erected. Mr. J. W. Hoskin, the Chairman, after the completion of their work, thanked all for the services rendered, and invited them to be present at the unfurling. Mr. and Mrs. H. Skiffington are spending a week’s vacation with their relations at Whangaroa. The gang of men on the Mangatoitoi Road, under Mr. J. M. Dawson, have made a great showing for the time they have been at it. The Fairburn-Kaiaka Hall trustees met on Saturday evening last, Mr. H. ,A. Morey presiding. After the minutes were confirmed, the secretary, Mr. J. W. Hoskin ( submitted the balance sheet, which disclosed the liability still standing on the hall at £IOB, this amount creeping up from £75, owing to the charges for the use of the Hall being altogether too low. A scale of increased charges was then submitted to the meeting, and was unanimously adopted. Our district’s sympathy is extended to Mr. Jabez Foster, of Oruaiti, in his recent *ad bereavement. Quite a number of relations and friends journeyed from this settlement to attend the funeral, which took place at Victoria Valley, on Tuesday last.

Owing to the recent fire, which entailed a considerable loss to Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Tracey, the settlers of Fairburn-Kaiaka district extending to Victoria Valley, have subscribed the creditable sum of £IOO odd, which will be duly handed to them shortly.
