OBITUARY

Quite a gloom was cast over the Herekino district on Friday, October 28th, when it was made known that Mrs. J. R. Bowman had passed away. The deceased was born at Ahipara over fifty years ago, and was a daughter of Mr. Edward Sidney Yates. She was a descendant of Te Rauparaha, the great fighting chief, and this probably accounted for the large number of Maoris, from all parts of the North, who attended the funeral. The burial took place at the Manukau Cemetery, and there were over 300 present at the funeral. Included in those present were several Maori Chiefs of high birth, one of whom w : ; Jxena Hapakuku, of the Ngatekuri. The deceased lady was the mother of thirteen children, of whom 10 (five sons and five daughters) survive her. The eldest daughter is married to Mr. T. S. Houston, of Ahipara, and the second to Mr. Archie Murray. Mr. Bowman and his lamily have the sympathy of the whole district in their sad bereavement.
