THURSDAY, JANUARY 13, 1921 LOCAL AND GENERAL

Owing to the heavy easterly weather the Apanui had to shelter at Kaimaumau till Sunday afternoon, arriving at Auckland at 4 p.m. on Monday. The return trip North this week has therefore been delayed. Ratepayers are reminded of the general meeting of the Ratepayers’ Association to be held in the Library on Monday, 17th January, at 8 p.m. Business important. See advertisement. The Whangarei High School opens on February 7th, and early application is necessary for parents wishing their boys to be accommodated at the school hostel. The bachelors of Kaitaia are giving a ball in the Northland Theatre on Friday, 4th February. They are out to make it “ the ball of the year.” Steps have been taken to form an Agricultural, Pastoral, and Horticultural Association at Herekino, and it is the intention to hold a Show shortly. Mr Harry Old is the energetic secretary. W e draw attention to the sports meetings to be held at Herekino on the 28th January and at Victoria Valley on the sth March. Big prize money is being offered and there is bound to be a large number of entries at both fixtures. We draw attention to Mr. Raymond’s advertisement .notifying a large quantity of seasoned kauri and hardwood for sale at the dredge, Waipapakauri. Those who attended the deputations to the Hon. J. G. Coates at Kaitaia were particularly struck with the gentlemanly action of Mr. A. H. Long, County Chairman, who, when the question was put to him by the Minister as to how the Mangonui County Council came to get into such a hopeless financial mess, did not try to protect himself behind his predecessor, which as a matter of fact he might justly have done, but shouldered the responsi-' bility, and stated without equivocation that the Council of which he had hitherto been an ordinary member had pooled the subsidy and other monies and used the m for general purposes. Such a fiijp sporting spirit is unfortunately only too rare in our public life. We draw the attention of those in possession of firearms of any kind to the severe penalty incurred should they fail to register with the nearest police officer before the end of January.
