METEOROLOGY

* CLIMATE OF THE NORTH AUCKLAND PROVINCE. In view of (lie erroneous impressions that prevail with regard to the climate of the North Auckland peninsula, we have pleasure in publishing (he following report supplied to the North Auckland Development Hoard by the Rev. D. C. Dates, Director Meteorological Office, Wellington, New Zealand, in January, 11)17. Mr. Bates says:— “The district north of Auckland is the warmest and least disturbed atmospheric region in New Zealand. In the summer easterly breezes of a sub-tropical nature prevail with warm and humid conditions. Ttainfall is seldom deficient, but the winter is decidedly the rainy season. Atmospheric disturbances usually travel to these parts from the tropics at all times of the year, but the westerly disturbances which cause changes in the southern districts of New Zealand, in winter and spring frequently extend their influence north, and the south-west wind, which follows in the rear of an extensive westerly, will cause heavy driving rain further north than New Zealand.” Records of rainfall are available for a number of years from a fair number of' representative stations * in this district, and full climatological reports from Auckland from 1853 to date, and from Mangonui between 1804 and 1880. The mean monthly temperatures in the shade for Mangonui are as follow: —

Observations at Auckland were kept from 1853 to 1807 by the Royal Engineers, and have since ► been maintained by the Meteorological Office with a local observer. These results afford the most reliable averages in New Zealand, and the means for the rainfall are as follow

“Sunshine records have been maintained for seven years al Auckland, and although the results do not stand as high as Napier or Nelson, yet sunshine is plentiful. The summer afternoon clouds of radiation appear to cut off an amount of blight sunshine, but the results aie comparable with some of the most favourable regions of the earth, and it is to be remembered that too much sunshine is not desirable. “ Hours of sunshine at Auckland: —
