NORTHERN FREEZING WORKS

IN our editorial columns we have time and again pointed out the disability under which the Far North has suffered, owing to the neglect in opening up its idle lands. This neglect has been more fully brought home to us by the agitation started by the North Auckland Development Board, and the opinions of our guests during the recent Parliamentary Tour. But whilst we have been fully justified in charging the Government with neglect, we have to realise that in the great Development movement, the settlers have also to assist themselves. The construction of arterial roads and railways is essentially the duty of the Government. The erection of Dairy Factories, Freezing Works, and other concerns of a like nature is the duty of the settlers.

It is therefore with pleasure that we note the success that is attending the flotation of a Freezing Company for the North, without which our great Development movement would be of comparatively little value.

Here we have hundreds of thousands of acres of excellent fattening country, hundreds of thousands of head of cattle and sheep have been produced and sold at prices far below their value owing to the absence of the Freezer. The large increase in the meat eating population of the world during the past twenty years, which increase will be accelerated, owing to the war, leaves no room for doubt as to the high prices which will attain for meat for years to come. All that is required, is for the people of the North to have confidence in their district, and themselves and support the new Company by every means in their power.
