Auckland - Sydney Cable.

Mr. John Milward, the manager in the Paoifie for the Pacific Cable Board, arrived at Mangonui yesterday, and proceeded to Doubtless Bay where he is stayiug for a day or two. Last week he spent three days on the west coast making investigations as to whether a suitable place could be found to land a cable direct from Sydney to Auckland, and reports that he found three sites that would answer the purpose. The cable could not he laid across the Manukau, as the shifting bottom of the bar would tend to break the cable, but north of the Manukau Heads the conditions would be favourable. The cost would be greater owing to physical conditions than laying the Cable to Doubtless Bay, but the Board are desirous of briugiug the cable as olose as possible to the busy centres, by this means reduoing the re-transmission of cablegrams and ensuring greater speed and acouraoy.
