Mangonui County Council.

A meeting of the Mangonui County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Mangonui, at 2.30 p.m., on Tuesday last. There were present Crs. George Wilkinson (chairman), J. Evans sen., H. Powell and E. M. Masters. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A letter from Miss Beetham, Matron of the Mangonui hospital, in regard to the inadequacy of the water supply at the hospital, was read. At tho suggestion of Cr. Powell, supported by Cr. Evans, it was decided to acknowledge receipt. On the motion of Cr. Evans, seconded by Cr. Masters, it was decided to pay Mr. G. Johnson, of Kaitaia, the sum of four pounds for the erection of a gate on his property. Proposed by Cr. Masters and seconded by Cr. Wilkinson—That Mr. George Foster’s letter be acknowledged and that in regard to his claim for £3, for work done at Oruaiti, the Councillor for the Riding inspect the work. (Carried.) A letter from Mr. Vernon Reed, M.P., re Government Subsidy for Awanui Wharf, Native Rating, etc., was directed to be acknowledged. At the instance of Cr. Powell, supported by Cr. Evans it was decided that the Chairman should confer with Mr. H. H. Thompson as to repairing the approach to White’s Bridge. Oruru, and as to the disposal of the old timber from the bridge. Crs. Powell and Masters were responsible for a resolution instructing the Clerk to advise Mr. Slater and the Kauri Timber Company (in reply to letters) that the Council have no funds for the purpose of purchasing a metal crusher. A resolution was passed to the effect that the Council have no objection to the fencing, by the Mangonui Medical Club, of the blind lane behind the Doctor’s residence, at Mangonui, provided same he not required by the public. A letter from the Chairman of the Whangaroa County Council was received and on the motion of Cr. Powell, seconded by Cr. Masters, it was agreed to advise the writer that the Council could not pay Packet License fees to the Whangaroa County for past years. An arrangement made with Mr. F. Jecentho in regard to the haulage of long length bridge timber for works in progress or contemplated was confirmed. Cr. Powell moved and Cr. Masters seconded —That Mrs. Lawrence be paid ten shillings per week as Charitable Aid for four weeks and at the end of that time a claim for a refund be made by the Clerk on her four brothers—A. Snelgar, Takahue, H. Snelgar, Broadwood, Alf Snelgar, Double Crossing and Joe Snelgar, Waikato. On the motion of Cr. Powell, seconded by Cr. Evans, it was agreed to draw a cheque for £3 10/- on account of the funeral expenses of the late J. F. Lawrence, the Clerk to interview Mr. H. H. Thompson regarding the disposition of the same. A letter was read from Mr. J. Steed in which he applied for certain land included in the Kauri Gum Reserve at Waiharara. At the instance of Crs. Wilkinson and Powell the Clerk was instructed to refer Mr. Steed to the Auckland Crown Lands Board for assistance in the matter. Proposed by Cr. Powell and seconded by Cr. Masters—That a letter of thanks be sent to any person donating books, papers, flowers or the like to the Mangonni hospital. (Carried.) An application for a Slaughtering License by F. Jecentho, of Peria, was granted. At the suggestion of Cr. Masters, supported by Cr. Wilkinson, the Road Overseer was instructed to meet Mr. Allen Matthews at a culvert, referred to by the latter in a letter to the Council, on the Kareponia road and to report on the possibility of the water draining from the ditches alongside the road through the culvert.

Cr. Wilkinson proposed and Cr. Masters seconded—That the Road Overseer be instructed to grade and measure a road line from the Mangunui Police Station through the Domain to the Church and to estimate and report on the probable cost of such a road. (Carried.) At the instance of Cr. Evans, supported by Cr. Powell, it was decided to reduce the amount of Charitable Aid payable

to Mrs. Max Ramm as from date. Ten shillings per week to be paid in futiiro instead of fiftoon shillings as at present. This in consideration of Mrs. Ramm’s children now being ablo to assist her. On the motion of Cr. Powell, seconded by Cr. Evans, i * agreed to increase W. Johnston’s i «,ble Aid by half a crown a week, making tho payment seven shillings and sixpence per week from date. The sum of three pounds was authorised to he paid to tho Delegate at tho Counties Conference. Proposed by Cr. Powell and seconded by Cr. Evans—That the Mangonui Post Master he written to and he be asked to have the telephone now in Mrs. Harris’s house transferred to the now residence for the Mangonui Medical Officer. (Carried.) Cr. Powell proposed and Cr. Evans seconded—That this Council record their appreciation of the satisfactory work done by Mr. J. M. Reid as Ranger and Collector during the current year, the total collected to dato being £623. (Carried.) Crs. Wilkinson and Powell gave notice that at next meetieg of the Council they would move that a rate of five farthings in the £ on tho Capital Value of all the rateable property within the County be levied for the year commenced on Ist day of April, 1909, and ending on 31st March, 1910. Accounts to tho amount of £450 were passed for payment and the Council rose at 11 p.m.
