Beach Road, Mangonui.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I was rather amused to see that an attempt was made to father a letter to Victoria Valley re Jthe alleged mud on that fine thoroughfare, Beach Road. I promise you our roads out hire are muddy and no make-believe, and we quite appreciate getting on to such a fine stretch as the Beach Road. I can’t understand all tho growling aboui this road, unless it is tlmt news is scarce and the “ Ago” has got to be filled, but considering that the printing office is not very far from the pub. I think that you are making an unnecessary fuss about it. In your previous week’s issue you had rather a sensible leading article (for you) advising all residents and ratepayers to put their shoulders to the wheel and assist the local body with a little practical help. I suppose writing to the "Age” is Mangonui’s idea of practical help, or perhaps it was not intended to apply to Mangonui, only to “ the other fellow.” If, as your alleged correspondent states, John Loudon Macadam first introduced metal on the Beach Road in 1756—1837 he took a mighty long time about it, hut all things considered tho road has stood well. If only John Loudon Macadam had built a few concrete retaining walls and filled them iu, before Mangonui earth was valued at 4d, per oubio yard (1907 —1908), it would have left a lot of money available to Bpend on roads that really need it. —I am, etc.,
