A Mangonui Presentation.

Farewell to Mr. D. »enman. A representative gath\i n g as sembled in Mangonui on WVjnesday afternoon, 19th December, '(or the purpose of bidding farewell D. Penman, agent of the N.S.SACoy., who has been promoted to the iharge of the Paeroa office. The occasion was taken at the same time to present him with a handsome travelling kag as a small token of the esteem in which he was held throughout district. jB Mr. Geo. Wilkinson, County Chain man, said he had a pleasant function I to perform in making the presentation. I •.’He had known Mr. Penman for the " past six years, during which time he had had many buisness dealings with him, and he was sure he was only echoing the feelings of the district when he expressed his deep regret at Mr. Penman’s departure. Mr. Penman had filled his position as agent of the N.S.S. Company with credit to himself and satisfaction to the public. By his tact and courtesy he had won the esteem of all, and he had made it hard for his successor to gain the same degree of popularity. He (the speaker) could truthfully say that what was Mangonui’s loss would be 1 Paeroa’s gain, and he hoped to see Mr. Penman back in Mangonui before many years, and that the town would have so correspondingly advanced as to make his return the occasion of a still further promotion in the Company he had served so faithfully.

Mr. Penman thanked those present for the presentation and Mr. Wilkinson for his kind remarks. He had not expected any recognition of this kind from the public. He had ing his six years’ residence among V them done his best for the Company 1 and -the district, and he had always ( met with good feeling and kindness. He would always have a warm heart for Mangonui, for it was here he had found his first home in New Zealand, and the handsome bag they had given him that day would be treasured as a memento of the many kind friends he had met in the district. Mr. Geo. Green said that Mr. Wilkinson’s speech had left nothing for any one else to say. He coulc only wish Mr. Penman, ;$ > enman and family a safe voyage Cuid muck happiness and success in tbeir new home, a sentiment in which th« gathering heartily joined.
