NELSON VOLUNTEEE AETILLEEY.
Last night the Oddfellows' Hall was crowded to overflowing on the occasion of the performances given by the members of the Nelson Volunteer Artillery for the benefit of the band fund. This was a well-deserved compliment to the amateurs, who performed their parts with great credit. Nor must we forget to pay a compliment to the two ladies by whom they were ably assisted in tho second part of the programme. The scenery was new, the dresses good, the few mistakes that occurred were unnoticed, and a rery pleasant eutertainment was thoroughly enjoyed. After the overture the following address, composed by a. member of the company, was spoken : — We do beseech your worships to attend, And give your good consideration Unto the programme we before you lay; And we do entreat you to overlook The blunders and the faults which you Bhall find, As being of a body yet unfledged ; Aud we do hope by study of the Muse, And diligently invoking of her art, That at all future gatherings we may Be far more worthy of your good support. The cause which moveth us to come bef6re you, Is really a good one, being this — That for the gratifying of your tuneful ears, We have now established, and do seek To keep established at all future time, A brotherhood of those who, from the throats Of brazen instruments, do draw sweet sounds Upon the air. But as unrighteous Mammon Doth hold the world enthralled, without his aid We can do nothing ; therefore we entreat You do, by patronage, us so assist In this our plan, that we with great success Achieve the most desirable result.
