MINING INTELLIGENCE.

A dividend of 2a. 2il. por 24,000 th share has been declared payable in the Golden Fleece Company, Murray Creek, on and after the 16th instant. The totul sum availnblu for this dividend is £2,600. The Westport paper states that the Monte Christo claim at the Lyoll promises to yield as well as the famed L\ttlo Wonder. Splendid stono has been struck in a luador fifteen to oighteen inches wide, nml thickenin/j as it poes down. Tho Inangahua Iferald, of the 25th January, says : — "Tho implication of Thomns Barker and others, for a gold-mining lease of ground known as No. 8 North, Adam Smith's, and comprising 9 acre? 3 roods 24 perches, has been recommended by tho Warden. The company is onfitled tho Golden Gate Gold Mining Company. The Surveyor reported that tho ground had been prospected, and a leader struck near to tho south boundary. It was decided to reserve tho course of Murray Creek and the Energetic machine site from the ground applied for. James Frue and others had an application recommended for a lease of 16£ acres on Anderson's line, the situation being known a» No. 3 north. A goldbearing leader hud been struck in the ground. The application of Robert Tupley, for the Lurry's Creek Gold Mining Company, for a lease of 7 acres 1 rood 20 perches, for gold mining purposes, situate at Larry's creek, was heard on Wednesday lash The purveyor reported that tho ground had been worked since the first of tho rush in driving tunnels and sinking a shaft on tho reef. A previous application had been refused, owing to tho boundaries having included tho course of the river. In the present application the river was included, as it was intended to work the reef by undermining the river. The "Warden stated that tho course of the river must be reserved. With lhnfc exception tho application would be recommended." The same paper says : — " Anderson's machine had to discontinue crushing for the Invincible Company on Wednesday in consequence of the damage sustained by the raeo during the late floods. It was thought that probably there might bo sufficient "water in tho creek to complete tho Invincible Btone, but owing to the rnin ceasing it was found necessary to repair the race; this was done and crushing resutned on Thursday evening. The Invincible btone will bo through the batteries to-day, and tho entire quantity that will be crushed will only slightly exceed 120 tons." The Dunolly Express reports that there from 900 to 1200 miners at the Avoca Hush, and considerably over the majority, if not all of them, are getting gold enough for a fair living. The best yields have not gone over an ounce to the load, and very few that; the average is from five to seven pennyweights. There are no pieces to speak of, tho only approximation to coarse gold being some little four to five ponny weight bits. Nearly ull the claims give nothing but fine gold. The sinking is hard, and ranges from twelve to twenty-five feet on tho flut. Some new ground is being opened up at tho north end of tho flat, on the rising ground, towards Fenton's Creek and Korong. Here tho sinking is only from four to six feet, and the gold is occasionally a little coarser. Hopes are entertained that if lho lead continues towards Korong heavier pieces may yet bo obtained. Carting and washing is 3s. por load at the long toms, and 3s. 6d. at the puddling machines. Water is raised to the latter from the river by double-barrel crane pumps, worked by horse-powor. On some claims the shafts and drives require timbering, aud are dangerous without it, as may be inferred from the case of tho unfortunato man who lost his life there lately. Drinking water is Bold oa tho flat at 2d. per small sized tin bucket. The Ballarat Star gives tho following information, which will be vory acceptable to tho miner: — " Tho disagreement among the bunks has already lowered tho rate of interest charged to public bodies on overdrafts, aud it will have another capital effect, nnmely, causing an advance in the price of gold. Already one bank has made overtures to a rival's customers, and has offerod the tempting bait of an increaso of sd. per ounce. The banks must surely have done very well during tho combination. They can now afford to charge two por cent, per annum less on large and safe advances, and at least one bank thinks it can afford to pay sd. an ounco more for gold than it has been giving. The Observer reports that the Kyueton shire council's overdraft will in future be charged at tho rate of seven per cent., and they will get the benefit of any reduction in the rate of intereßt."

Strange Suicide. — A very singular suicide was lately committed at Cleveland, in America. The victim of the rash act procured a revolver, aud connected it with a species of clock-work, so that it should bo fired off nt a certain time. He then got into bod nnd took a dose of cholroform, after having placed tho pistol behind his ear. He then, under tho influenco of the narcotic, went to Eleep. At the givon time tho clock-work pressed the trigger of the pistol, which went ofT, and launched tho wretched man into eternity. A New Arbitration.— The statement that England and Portugal have chosen M. Thiers as Arbitrator in tho question, for soveral years pending, rolativo to certaiu territory on the Eastern coast of Africa, is officially confirmed. A protocol to this effect was signed at Lisbon on the 25th of September. The Temps remarks that England affords an excellent example in thus continuing to have recourso to arbitration to Bettlo pending disputes. The Temps and Journal dcs Debats regard the choice of M. Thiers as a mark of high reßpect and consideration for tho Eepublio and its illustrious President.
