HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS.
" Nelson Examiner," December 30. We are happy to be able to report some progress in this business. On Thursday afternoon, the Governors of Nelson College received a deputation of ladies and gentlemen, who submitted a draft proposition to them, embodying conditions on which they requested the Governors to take charge of such an institution. The promoters of the plan had prepared au estimate of probable receipts and expenditure, based upon specific inquiries as to rents and salaries, and on conjectures as to the number of scholars. They proposed, in the event of the Governors giving a conditional approval, to appeal to the public for a limited guarantee or subscription to meet possible deficiencies in the early years of the establishment ; and to ascertain by careful canvas the number of pupils who may be expected at the commencement. A sum of £200 had already been promised, and several of the Governors liberally proposed, so soon as the College funds can meet their demand, to draw arrears fees which are due, and hand the amount over to the guarantee fund. There is good hope that, owing to the lapse of certain liabilities onthe Steam Trust Eund, the College may be financially in a position to make this payment without injury to the existing school. The adoption of the proposal by the Governors will be tantamount to its success. ■ Of course they will take it in hand, if at all, wholly untrammelled by the previous action of the promoters, except in so far as they will be engaged to subscribers and guarantors to furnish, by the aid of experienced male teachers, a sound English education, with instruction in one foreign language; to offer facilities for learning other languages, music, drawing, &c, as extra branches of study — and to provide a proper boarding establishment for country pupils. The school will thus be on a thoroughly public basis. The Governors will answer definitively with but little delay, so as to enable parents to consider the proposal before the re-open-ng of schools after the holidays.
