MELBOURNE.—APRIL 29.

There has been a fair amount of business transacted in the import markets, chiefly for trade requirements. Breadstuff's maintain a firm and steady aspect, notwithstanding which we have no large aales to refer to. Buyers of wheat are ready enough to operate, though they decline to pay the rates required by holders; offers of ss. 6d. for prine samples are freely drawn out, nothing, however, can be purchased under os. 7d. to ss. Bd. Flour has been quitted in small trade parcels at £12 15s. to £13. Sales of good New Zealand oats are effected up to 3s. lOd. Maize in the morning was a trifle easier, but all offering at 4s. 9d. having been cleared off, none could be got under 4s. lOd. by the afternoon. The auction sales of teas attracted a large attendance of the trade; 5,500 packages altogether were disposed of. Congou dust and sittings brought 6#d. to 7£d.; ordinary, rather broken, realized 9d.; common, 12|d.; and medium to fine, 12£ d. to Is. lOd. Scented orange pekoes sold at 2a., and young hyson at Is. 4d. The fine congous, ex Bertha, were withdrawn at 2s. 3d., as also some S. O. pekoe and scented caper. We note a considerable demand for sugar. Some rather heavy parcels are reported to have been placed with the trade, of qualities ranging from good counter to white crystals, at £39 to £43. Some damaged lota are advertised for auction sale on Friday. Tobaccos command improved attention, and values of fine descriptions are evidently stiffening. A line of fancies was taken up at prices rising, according to quality, to Is. Bd. Sixty-two packages were also quitted at the bond, in faulty condition, at extreme figures. Twists brought le. 4d. to Is. 4fd.; halfpounds sold at lHd. to lL£d.; pieces realized Is. 2^d.; bars, Is. to Is. 4£d.; aromatic twists, 9£d.; and tens, B£d. to Bxd., net cash. Candles are neglected. We observe that the Neva Company have reduced the price of their brand to lHd. A good demand is experienced for fine hams; parcels of Varey's brand, of twenty to fifty and seventy-five cases in a lino, having been freely purchased at 13d. to 13id. Sales of bacon are also made at lOJd. and lid. A parcel of sixty bottles of quicksilver was disposed of at 2s. Kerosine oil is very much inquired for. Many parcels are under negotiation; the extreme rates required, however, keep back operations. Soda crjstals have been placed at £8. In spirits, we hear of the disposal of a thousand cases of V. H. and Co.'s geneva, at 12s. Small lots of Henneesy's pale brandy, in bulk, realize 7s. 9d.; for large parcels, a trifle less money would not be refused.—Argus.
