A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
To the Editor of the 'Nelson Examiner.' Sir — While recently perusing tho advertising columns of your paper, I was much pleased to observe that tho drawing classes in the various district schools were about to be commenced again, and also that great boon to the enlightenment of the general public (the loss of which has been so long felt in Nelson), the Scnool of Arts, under the supervision of such an able principal as Mr. T. Hodgson. The benefits to accrue by securing the services of a gentleman so thoroughly capable to fill the position he will hold, will be felt in years to come by the rising generation, and place Nelson amid the foremost in art and science in tho colony of New Zealand. Nothing tends to expand tho mind of youth, and give the eye that firmness and precision so highly requisite in almost every trade and profession as drawing. Hardly a day passes over our heads, in our several avocations, that the want of it in some way or another is not felt, if it so happens that we havo not been lucky enough to obtain an insight in the arts during our school days ; therefore every parent whoso children attend the different echools, and who look forward to their future position in the world with pride and pleasure, ought to avail themselves of tho present opportunity, and enter their children in the classes where they will obtain a knowledgenever to beforgottciijwhichnotbcingmcrely theoretical, and simply drummed into their heads, in the usual mode of masters of the present day, but a thoroughly practical course, under a thoroughly practical master who lias had so much experience. I say again they will obtain a knowledge, which in after years may prove highly beneficial to their prospects in life. It is a credit to the province to see so much spirit displayed in an undertaking totally unheeded in many places ; and I congratulate the Nolson public, and must say, in spite of the prejudicial world, that they really have taken a Btep in tho right direction. I remain, &c, Civis.
