The Markets.

HOKITIKA. Wett Coatt Times Office, September. 29. Considerable activity in the import market has been apparent during the weefc, consequent upon the arrival of several of our regular traders, with generally assorted cargoes, considerably adding to stocks. We notice the imports are \ cry generally distributed over the mercantile houses here. These regular supplies cannot materially affect the market, but tend to a continuance i of the healthy aud satisfactory condition we have had to note for some time past. The simultaneous arrivals of some lines, previously scarce, has caused a downward tendency, in which may be indicated outs — a ehort time ago scarce. The quantity to hand during the week, has been for our limited consumption, somewhat heavy — say from 7,000 to 8,000 bushels. The cargo of the Prince Consort (476 bags) was offered at ship's side, a portion only being allowed to go at 7s. 6d. per bushelremainder withdrawn. For a very fine parcel, ex Falcon, offered on wharf yesterday, 6s. 9d. was refused. Bulk beer consigned to store for better rates, ex same ship. Chuff brougt£l9 per ton; carrot?, £14; turnips, £8; potatoes, £6 per ton ; whole mai?e, 7s. 6d. per bushel. Flour has come Forward more freely, but without affecting prices ; Adelaide, £21 to £21 10s.; Chilian, £19 10s. Hams and bacon— Coey's have been placed at Is. 6d. per lb. English cheese, Is. 6d. and Is. ojd- for large and email. Butter, previously very scarce, has come in freely, Is. 7d. being realized for first to hand ; 2s. 4d. to 2s. od. is now wanted for prime parcels. Wines and spirits remain stationary; imports limited. Also, bottled beer, which has met with little inquiry, aa the bulk of the due shipments are to hand, a steady ana firm market is anticipated for tie eniuring week.
