THE NELSON EXAMINER. Thursay August 9, 1866.
Journals become more necessary as men become more equal *ud individualism more to be feared. It would be to underrate their importance to suppose that they serve only to lecture liberty j they maintain omlization. Db Tocqubvillb, Of Democracy in America, toI. 5, 230. By the Gothenburg, last evening, we received files of Melbourne papers to the 28th ultimo, but we are unable to give extracts in our present number. Adelaide flour was selling in the Melbourne market at £16 to £16 10s. a ton. Shipments of Chilian continued to arrive, but were heavy of sale. The most important intelligence brought us is the stoppage of the Bank of Queensland. The Government of that colony had previously run out of funds ; their debentures would not go off, and the Banks refused to make advances on them. The Bank of Agra, which had promised ita assistance, had failed, and the Government was left penniless. The stoppage of the local bank will add greatly to the troubles of Queensland at this juncture.
