ANNUAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERS OF THE NELSON INSTITUTE. Tho annual meeting of the members of this Institute was held on Tuesday evening last. The chair was occupied by the President, Mr. H. Adams. Mr. Pbbcy brought up and read the following "Ekpoht ov tub Committee op the Nelson Institutb, tob the Yeab ending Decembeb 31, 1865. "The committee, in presenting their report, beg to express their regret that, owing to the severe illness of Mr. 0. Curtis, the Treasurer, they wore unable to present the subscribers with the usual annual statement of accounts, at the last annual meeting. Two years* accounts are therefore laid before you. " During the latter part of the past year, upwards of seventy names were added to the list of subscribers } and the paid list of subscribers, at the close of the year, numbered 179. "Eighty-nine volumes have been added to the library during the past year, fourteen of which were received from the Nelson Book Club, as per arrangement, i

" The maintenance of the reading-room continues to be a heavy tax upon the funds of the Institute, and the committee would urge upon the members the necessity of endeavouring to increase the means of providing for that department, as at present, after defraying the cost of periodicals, newspapers, and the incidental expenses of the reading-room, little or no funds remain wherowith to purchase books for the library, the subscribers to which, far exceed those of the reading-room ; and it is to be feared that the committee cannot depend upon the continuance of the grant in aid of publio libraries, hitherto given by the Provincial Government.

" One of the upstair rooms has been let to the Governors of Nelson College, at a rental of £12 per annum, and the committee, feeling they ought to be provided with additional accommodation, have had the two remaining rooms properly furnished at a cost of £46.

" The museum is fast increasing, and more room than i» at present set apart for the purpose, will soon bo required ; and tho committee are glad to state that iti tuefulneu is being more largely felt and appreciated, it being telddm without visitors. " In tho hope of increasing the interest felt in the Institute, ana of adding something to its scanty funde, the committee determined upon hold an exhibition of works of art and other objects of interest, similar to that which was attended with successful results some years since ; and tho committee trust that by this means they will be able to make some desirable additions to the library. "In concluding their report, the committee are glad to bear testimony to the manifest improvement in the internal management of the library, under the charge of Mr. Nattrass. " By order of the Committe, "Jno. Pbbcy, "Secretary." The report was unanimously adopted. The balance sheets for the last two years, signed by the auditors, were then submitted to the meeting:-: NELSON INSTITUTE IN ACCOITNT WITH THB TbEABUBEB, FOE TUB YEAS 1864. DB. # £ ». d.
