CAPTURE OF A SPANISH CORVETTE

DEATH OF THE SPANISH ADMIRAL.
By the arrival of the brig Annie Laurie, at Auckland, from Valparaiso, news baa been received from the West Coast of America to the 6th of January. The intelligence brought is highly important, and we take the following from the Auckland Herald, of the 6th of March: — [From La Palria del Vapor, December 22.] Ofiiciaii CibcuiiAß of tub Mimstbb op Intebiob Relations. This Minister lias addressed to all Governors of Provinces the following circular informing them of tho taking of tho Covadonga. Saxtiaoo, Novembor 27, 1865. I hasten to communicate to you the following notice, taken from an official communication addressed under yesterday's date by tho commander of the National steam corvotto Esmeralda to the Commander-General of the Marina Department of Valparaiso. On the morning of tho abovo-mentioned day, the Eimorald.i loft the port of Papudo to give battle to the Spanish gunboat Covadonga, that had sailed from Coquimbo. After a combat of one half-hour the Esmeralda mado a prizo of tho Coradonga, and took prisoners her officers and crew. Tho prisoners -taken are as follows: the commander, six officers and from one hundred and ten to ono hundred and fifteen of her crew. We havo happily not lost one single man. The enemy on the contrary, had two killed, fourteen wounded, and amongst the latter an officer. V The intrepid commander of the Esmeralda, doesN not in his note give further particulars respecting this important occurrence, as tune was pressing. The close proximity of Papudo to the port of Valparaiso, where the enemy lio in far superior forco, allows the affair to bo considered as glorious in the extreme I am, &c., AIVABO COVABBTJBIAS.
