The Gothenburg arrived here from Melbourne, via Hokitika on Tuesday night. She brings us Hokitika news to the 3rd instant. A declaration has been prepared, pledging those who sign it, to support any qualified gentleman who comes forward as a candidate to represent the interests of the "West Coast in the General Assembly. It has already received a large number of signatures. The Government at last intend finishing the track between Hokitika and Kanieri. A man named Schunikon, formerly a storekeeper at the Arrow River, Otago, has lost hiß life in one of the Westland rivers. He was in company with two miners, who were unable to render him any assistance owing to the depth and rapidity of the stream. Another body of a man, drowned in the Three Mile Greet whilst attempting to croaa it whilst swollen, has been recently discovered on the beach between that stream and the Hokitika. The papers we have received contain no mining news whatever.
