By the arrival of the steamers Star of the Evening, from Dunedin, and Thane and Eleanor, from Nelson, a not unwelcome addition has been made to our stocks. Unfortunately, none of these \eßbels brought us hams or bacon in any quantity, and these staples, of whicn the consumption here is necessarily so great, remain at very high prices, lor the former 2s. Id. is readily obtainable, irrespective of brands, if the article is Bound and good ; while for the latter 2s. is the quotation for Sinclair's, and Is. lOd. to Is. lid. for Brown's andCooey J iS respectively ; but the market is all but cleared. Flour has a decidedly upward tendency, consequent upon the large increase in value established in "the Australian markets, and in the various provinces of this colony. Chilian is worth £36 in trade parcels, while for Adelaide £40 is the price asked. Sugars have been placed at 655. for good Mauritius counters ; and teas at £i 10s. for low congous in half-chests, and £5 10s. to £6 for good medium. Brandy unchanged ; Martell's, in quarter-casks, 255. per gallon. Whiskey, 18s. 6d. to 19s. Geneva, 625. 6d. to 655. per case. Old torn has been inquired for, and, in the present scarcity, as much as 455. to 50s. is asked for it. Building materials continue in demand; galvanized iron (Scotch), £48 to £50 ; rough boards and scantling, 30s. Sheet copper, the entire absence of which in the market has been for long sorely lelt br the miners working on the Beach, has at length been imported to a hiuall extent, and has naturally realized extravagant rates, having been placed in little parcels of from 2 en t. or 3 cwt. to 5 cwt., at Hi. to 12s. 6d._per lb., and is being eagerly bought by th« coniumwf at 168. supplied, and subsequent importers will doubtless have to be contented with smaller profits. QuicUsiher still scarce, nnd worth in quantity 10s. Horse-feed is in somewhat better supply, but tho rates are still high. Oats, 125. ; chutf", £30; brun, 6s. 6d. to 7s. Potatoes continue scarce; £14 is the price for parcels. Butter, 3s. to 3s. 3d.
