" Dear Sir — At a meeting held this day, at which were present the Chairman of the Board of Works, as representative of that body, and Messrs. Edwards and Scaife, on the part of the Insurance Agents, it was unanimously agreed that you should be requested to take charge, as ics captain, of a Fire Brigade, about to be formed in Nelson. In naming you, the meeting feel that they could not select a better person ; they hope that the desire which you on all occasions have shown to assist in matters similar to this, the public importance of which is so apparent, will lead you to accede to the wishes above expressed. " We might name it as intended that the captain shall have the selection of his own men and officers, whose payment will be guaranteed by the Insurance Offices, and out of the sum voted by the Board of Works for the purpose of a Fire-Brigade. Should {'ou accept the captaincy, tho whole matter will be eft with you, without interference •, and for the suggestion of details, such as are proposed to be adopted, Mr. Bentley, the Chairman of the Board of Works, will confer with you. Mr. Cartes reported that he had examined Ti-pabi-street in company with the Overseer, and found that a small culvert and other improvements were necessary, the cost of which was estimated to be about £10.

A letter was received from Mr. J. Patching, complaining that Mr. J. Hale had diverted water from coming down Vincent-street, so as to stop him from work.

It was resolved that the Overseer should wait on Mr. Hale and direct him that, if the water be diverted, it should be returned to the stream.

A letter was received from the Provincial Secretary, stating that By-law No. 6, referring to persons riding or driving on a footway, had been agreed to by the Government. The Secretary reported an application from Mrs. Baker, as to whether the Board would, if bub found the stones, place them before her door. It was resolved that, if proper stones be providjd, the Board would be at the expense of laying them down — but that the Btoues should then become public property The Oversees reported that Mrs. Bird had proTided stones with which to pave the channel in front of her house and wished the Board to be at the expense of putting them down. Ordered to be done.

The Secretary reported that complaint had been made by the occupant of a cottage as to a furze bush on land in the occupation of Mr. Hack worth which was dangerous. Ordered that notice be given for having the same attended to. The Secretary reported an application from Mr. Black, who had himself had a deal of work done in Kawhia-street, for some gravel to be put there. The Overseer was instructed to visit the spot and givo an estimate of the cost of complying with Mr Black's request. A circular was received from Messrs. Johns and Trewheellar, stating that they were about seeking relief under the Debtor and Creditors' Act. Ab thiß referred to Borne unpaid rateß of Messrs. Johns and Trewheellar, it was resolved that the advice of the Provincial Solicitor be taken and acted on.

Attention was called to the large stones placed in the pathway in Hardy-street, and the Overseer was ordered to see to the same.

Mr. Graham gave notice that, at the next meeting, he would bring forward the question of improving Grove-street, by Collingwood bridge.

Patent Slip and Dey Dock.— By the Provincial Government Gazette, dated February 16, we see, "That his Honour the Acting Superintendent, directs it to be notified, for general information, that he has appointed the under mentioned gentlemen, viz., Robert Pollock, James Crowe Richmond, and John Blockett, to be Commissioners for the purpose of collecting statistical ami other inform/it ion relative to the commerco of the colony and of this port, and to take evidjnce as to the best sites in the Nelson harbour for a Patent Slip aud Dry Dock."

Registration of Letters.— By a proclamation in the Government Gazette, of December 31, 1864, the fee for registering letters posted for places iv Nen Zealand wjlb reduced to sixpence. On letters foi other countries the old fee of one •billing is maintained.
