SITE FOR THE POST OFFICE. To the Editor of the 'Nelson Examiner.'
Sie — I see that the Colonist's version of the report of the Committee of the Provincial Council on- the Post Office site, would lead many persons to believe the site of the old Court House bad been recommended by the Chamber of Commerce. This I believe is a mistake. I have reason for stating that the Chamber of Commerce were in favour of the place now occupied by the first flight of steps immediately at the head of Trafalgar-street. The Colonist?* report of the proceedings in last night's Council would lead persons to infer that there is a difficulty in finding an equivalent for the alleged claim of these College Governors to land in Trafalgar-square. I would ask the Provincial Government whether they have ever considered this subject? Do they wish that one part of the public should flourish at the expense, and to the detriment of another part? If the Provincial Government does not wish to act unfairly in this matter they can give the College Governors legal title to land they already occupy, I allude to the street which did run through the College properly, but was closed ty order of the Bench of Magistrates. That closed street is more than an equivalent for their doubtful title to laud in Trafal-gar-square I am, &0., Josiph Wsbb.
The Duke ov Newcastle's bbpabatb Despatch. — The New Zealand Advertiser states, that it learns by advices from Auckland " that the term of the separate despatch, referred to by the Duke of Newcastle, with reference to the cost of the troops, w**oliat the natives must be at one* iritdved, as the Imperiil Government could not beair tv? drain on its revenues which the long continuance of «r large body of troops in New Zealand would occasion. This explains the cause of the preparations /or an attack upon Waikato without Ministers first wnvesing tfaja .#*o*rsl Assembly." -■'■■
