The Lyttelton. — The steamer Lyttelton, under the command of Captain Whitwell (late of the Tasmanian Maid), arrived here yesterday morning, having left Port Cooper on Tuesday afternoon, the 4th instant, and has come up in sixty hours, having encountered a strong gale of wind from the North-west the whole way. The Lyttelton is a paddle steamer of 79 tons register, and 25 horse-power, 75 feet long, and 18 feet beam, her greatest draught of water, when fully loaded, being 4ft. 6in. She is an iron boat, built in London, by Messrs. Scott, Russell, and Co. (the builders of the Great Eastern), and has great carrying capacity. She has been purchased by Messrs. N. Edwards and Co., of this city, for the coasting trade of this province and Marlborough, and it is their in- 1 tention to run her one or two trips to the Wai- 1 rau, when she will be fitted up with cabins for saloon and steerage passengers. The Lyttelton, from her light draught of water, is specially adapted for ascending the Opawa river to Blenheim, which will be a matter of great convenience to the inhabitants of that district. On Monday, 20th instant, at about 3, p.m., the schooner Sarah, while lying in German Bay, Akaroa, was struck by lightning. Fortunately no one was injured, the hands having just previously gone ashore. The electric fluid appears first to have struck the head of the mainmast ( from which a large splinter was torn ), and after passing down and scarring the the mast, it finally struck the deck, destroying the after-beam of the hatchway. — Lyttelton Timee, October 29.
