Local Intelligence. RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Satubday, April 19.

[Before J. Poynteu, Esq., Resident. Magistrate.] James O1O 1 Brien, was charged with having assaulted a constable while in the execution of his duty.

Prisoner : I admit that I was drunk but I know nothing of the assault.

Evidence having been given in proof of the assault, prisoner was fined £5 or to be imprisoned for two months with hard labour.

Thomas Phillips, a seaman belonging to the crew of the Queen of India, was charged with larceny. Prisoner : I admit that I wbb drunk. The Resident Magistrate : I shall sentence you to imprisonment for three days.

The Captain of the Queen of India having subsequently askod that prisoner might be at once sent on board, as his Bhip was ready for sea, prisoner was sent away in charge of the captain.

ADJOURNED LICENSING MEETING.

The adjourned licensing meeting was held on Saturday last, at the Court-house, when licenses were granted to Joseph Edwards, for the Prince Albert ; to Robert Carter, for the Rising Sun ; James Sanders, of the Bush Tavern; John Jervis, of the Commercial Hotel; Hen*y Williams, of the Victoria Hotel, Nelson ; and to William Auty, of the Motueka Hotel, Motueka.

The application made by John Armstrong, for a renewal of the license to the Prince Alfrsd, Bridgestreet, waa refused, on the ground that the Magistrates

thought it was injudicious to grant a license next door to another licensed house.

Mr. Armstrong : lam sorry to hoar such a decision and would remind the bench that such an objection did not weigh with them when my next door neighbour applied for a license.

The Resident Magistbate told Mr. Sharp for the future to refus9 nil applications for licenses which were not properly filled in, and said that the bunch would not allow applicants to give certain names as their sureties and subsequently to change them.
