CRICKET.

Cricket and rifle-shooting seem to be the order of the day. On Saturday, the 12th instant, the return match between the Kanzau aud Spring Grove Clubs was played, in a paddock near the Ked Horse, .Wai-inea-east. The weather during the week being very changeable, doubts were entertained as to the probabability of a fine day; however, the day proved better than was anticipated. About ten, a.m., the wickets were pitched by the umpires, and the toss having been won by the Eanzau Club, they sent their opponents in. In the first innings the Spring Grove men made a score of 40, the Banzau 93 ; in the second innings the Spring Grove men made 80, making a total of 120, leaving the Eanzau men only 28 to win. The Eanzau men then took the bat, and, being over-confi-dent of success, played incautiously, and lost the game by 10 runs, making only 17 runs, aa will be seen by the following score; five men allowing themselves to be run out. The bowling of Me. A. Rutherford, of the Spring Grove Club, and Mr. T. Coleman, of the Eanzau Club, was very good. The play on the whole was very good, except the last innings of Eanzau, and the game was terminated about sunset. The company, including several new player., adjourned to the Bed Horse, where ample justice was done to a splendid dinner, provided by the hostess. Mr. C. P. Kearns (the president of the Eanzau Club) was called to the chair ; Mr. H. W. Perryman (the president of the Spring Grove Club) the vice-chair. The clubs will meet again on Easter Monday to play the conquering game. Ranzatx. First Innings. Second Innings. G. Snow, bA. Rutherford . 0 b A. Rutherford, c W. Dron .... 3 J. of what might have been a most serious fire, has oc- I ourred. The marls from Noirh and South have also brought accounts of fires, and regrets at inefficient means for quenching them. Does it really require a serious conflagration before some steps are taken for supplying us with a means of subduing so dangerous an element ? On Sunday night last, the inmates of Mr. Askew's house, Bridge-street, were astonished to hear the noise of some heavy weight falling in a room above. On going to see what it was, Mr. Askew observed that the side of the room behind some drawers was on fire, and most fortunate was it for the inmates that it was seen so soon. The noise had beon occasioned by the burning of a string by which a large picture had been suspended against the wall of one of the bedrooms, and wnich caused the picture to fall to the ground. Alarm was instantly given, and the fire bell being rung, a large number of persons were quickly assembled, but, fortun tely, a few buckets of water quenched the fire. Mr. Askew'a house was insured in the Northern Assurance Company. The stock in trade was not insured. The Agent of the Northern Assurance Company has given orders for the repair of the damage. Richmond Cattle Faib Association. — At the annual general meeting of shareholders of the Richmond Cattle Fair Association, held at the Star and Garter, Richmond, on Saturday, the 22nd March, F. A. Kelling, Esq., in the chair, the following gentlemen were elected Directors for the ensuing year: — Messrs. Wells, Esq., as auditors; after which a meeting of the directors was held, when W. Harkness was appointed as Secretary. It was agreed that the Agricultural Association should be allowed to erect such a building as they might think suitable for their use, the site to be arranged between the Secretary of the Agricultural Association and the Secretary of the Cattle Fair Association.
