Commercial Intelligence.

Nelson, September 11. Upon the whole, a brisker trade has been done since our last monthly summary than in the previous month j the weather which, up to within about ten days ago, had been very unfavourable, having since cleared up, has caused more inquiry for seasonable goods and articles of general consumption, and, during the last week, a brisk trade has been done, although storekeepers exhibited a disinclination to materially increase their stocks. As the season, advances, we look forward to an improved business being done. We have to report the arrival ot the Sir George Pollock, from London, on 81st August, and the Boomerang, from Melbourne, on the same day, in addition to the mail steamer from Sydney. These arrivals have added materially to stooks in first hands which are nell kept up, and there are very few articles which are at all low at present time. We have this last month received the most favourable accounts from the Gold Fields on the West Coast, where large quantities of the precious metal are being obtained both by Europeans and Maoris, with the rudest appliances. Several small vessels have left for the locality during the month, conveying a number of diggers, as also tools and provisions, aud we look hourly for further accounts thence. There is now no doubt of this being a very rich field, a large quantity of gold having been brought to town, and a much larger weight remaining in the hands of diggers. From the Wangapeka diggings the news is very encouraging. The diggers have found « locality about four hours' journey further up the rirer, which appears to be much richer than the spot at which they commenced, and doubtless, as the summer advances, the prospects from this place will also greatly improve. It is to be hoped that ft practicable road will be discovered and OpexMdfeut, during tlw mmm*r t from thaw diggings to

those on the West Coast, which are on the other side of the same range of mountains.

The news from the Otago Gold Fields is satisfactory in the extreme, and, from the success attending operations there, we may look forward to more attention being bestowed upon this hitherto much neglected portion of the mineral wealth of this province. There is no doubt that the success at Otago will benefit all Now Zealand ; and, should the native disturbances be happily brought to a termination, we may look forward to a bright future, with coal, chrome, and copper to assist us.

The works of the Dun Mountain railway are progressing, and a tender has been taken during the month for that portion of the line through the town. A commencement has boen made in laying the rails, and the ballasting is expected to be finished throughout by end of next month. The following are our quotations :— IMPORTS.
