Thomas Leahy was charged with drunkenness. Defendant admitted the offence, and was fined £1, with costs, or forty-eight hours in gaol. Alteration in thb Aubival and Dkpabtuee OP THB I. R. M. Company's Steamebs.— As it may not be known that an alteration has been made, in the intercolonial and inter-provinoial steam service, we give below the times filed for the arrival and deptrtUTO of the vessels from this port, as mentioned m the advertigement in this day's issue. The inter-colonial steamer with the English mail will arrive fro na Sydney direct on the 24th of each month, and will leave for the southern provinces on the 26th, arriving again from Otago, Canterbury, and Wellington on the 10th, and leaving for Sydney direct on the 12th of each month. The inter-provincial steamer will arrive from the north on the 9th, and leave for the south on the 11th, arriving again on the 23rd, and leaving for the north on the 25th of each month. FIBE. — On Sunday last, at about midnight, a gorse hedge at the Nile-street end of Mr. Hale's garden, by some means, at present unknown, became ignited, and was burning fiercely, when it was fortunately discovered by a gentleman passing along the opposite side of the river : he immediately alarmed Mr. Hale and the neighbouring residents, who set to work with a will, and by then* unceasing efforts succeeded in extinguishing the fire, but not until a considerable portion of the hedge had been destroyed. lixrgal Weights and Measures.— Last month we cautioned the public respecting the use of steelyards, stating "that, as it might not be generally known, we would caution traders that steelyards, according to the Weights and Measures Ordinance, are illegal." A case occurred at the Resident Magistrate's Court, on the 9th instant, in which Michael Shannon was summoned for having sold by steeljard weight. The case was admitted, and defendant was fined £2 and costs.
