RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Wednesday, November 28.

[Before J. Poynteb, Esq., Resident Magistrate.]

Henry Coombes was charged with having been guilty of shaking his list in his wife's face and threatening to be the death of her. The Magistbate : What have you to any to the charge ? Defendant : I have more reason for making a coinplaint respecting the treatment I receive from my wife, than she has for making such a complaint as this against me. The Magistbate : I hare frequently heard of your disgraceful conduct since you were last here. You now say that you have more reason to complain of your wife than she has of you, how will you prove that ? You have been here four times within the last six months, and I know yon of old. Your behaviour has for some time been infamous. I have let you off with light penalties two or three times, but that appears to have been of no service to you. I shall therefore now require that you find two sureties who will be bound in the sum of £20 each, with yourself in £50, to secure your keeping the peace for the space of six calendar months, towards your wife and all her Majeety's subjects. Defendant : lam not able to find sureties. The Magistbate : Then you will remain in gaol until the time expires, and when you come out I hope you will be a wiser and moro sober man. Joint Jervis was charged with having threatened to give John Percy a good hiding. Defendant : I admit having done so, but I had received very great provocation from the complainant whom I had been compelled to summon for debt, and who used verr provoking language to me in the open street. such a threat, I must therefore bind you over to keep the peace for three months, in two sureties of £25 each, and yourself for £50.

Tabanaki Relief Fund .—By the last mail from the south, a draft of £500 was received from the Treasurer of the Otago Taranaki Relief Tund, "on account; of subscriptions raised in that province for the Taranaki sufferers." The money is directed to be applied "as it may be found requisite, in accordance with such regulations as may be made for the application of funds subscribed in the other provinces." Town Drainage.— We are glad to see the Board of Works advertising for a loan of money to enable them to undertake the construction of a sewer in Tra-falgar-street, in lieu of the open ditch which has so long been a disgrace to the town. Although the proposed sewer will very inadequately supply the requirements of the town, it will, if properly constructed, form an important portion of any more extended system of drainage which may hereafter be undertaken. Spobting. — Mr. Duppa's mare Phoebe won the Corporation Cup, at the Victoria Meeting, on the 27th of October, beating Haphazard, Lucy Glitters, Gaffer Grey, Despatch, Yankee, Brunette, and Dauntless. The Town Rate.— By advertisement in another column it will be seen that the Town rate for the ensuing year is payable at the office of the Board of Works on and after the 26th instant.
