THE WEST COAST.
The following letter has been received by the Chamber of Commerce, in reply tv their memorial to the Superintendent printed in our paper of the 12th instant : — " Provincial Secretary's Office, Nelson, 15th November, 1859. " Sib — I have the honour, by direction of the Superintendent, to acknowledge the receipt of the memorial of the Chamber of Commerce, recommending a general survey, topographical and geological, of the western portion of the province, and the employment of Mr. Julius Haast for that purpose. " In reply, I am directed by his Honour to inform you, that the completion of the explorations and surveys of the West Coast, commenced in February last, by an expedition of the kind alluded to in connection with Mr. Hdast, had, previously to the receipt of the memori >1, been under the favourable consideration of Government. I am, however, to beg you to accept his Honour's assur .nee, that this circumstance does not lessen the obligation conferred by the offer, on the part of the Chmnber, of any suggestions on a subject so intimately connected with the commerce of the province as the scientific investigation of its mineral, agricultural, and pastoral resources.
