A coloured man has been elected a member of the House of Assembly of the Island of Grenada.
A coroner's jury, sitting at Quebec, has recently returned a verdict of manslaughter against the owner, the master, the pilot, and the mate of the Montreal, the steamer which was recently burnt with a fearful loss of life.
Mr. W. Pentony, brother of Mr. Pentony, of Commutation-row, Liverpool, was shot dur» ing the New York riots, while standing at the wiudow of his residence, in Hudson-street, in that city. Mr. Pentony was well known in Liverpool, and the sad intelligence has thrown the members of his family here into the deepest grief.
The late Mrs. Faichney of Ardargie, by trust-deed of settlement, has bequeathed the" sum of a 63,000 for the establishment of an Industrial School for the city aud county of Perth.
The Wesleyan Methodist Conference, lately in session at Toronto, C. W., has expelled two of its members for immoral conduct — the Rev. Mr. Hough, of Hamilton, because he carried a revolver in his pocket for several days, intending to shoot a young gallant who had eloped with and married his daughter contrary to his will; and a young clergyman named Jones, of Toronto, because he corresponded with a young lady in England, with a view to matrimony, aud afterwards changed his mind as to the propriety of forming an alliance with her, because he loved another better.
The troops on active service in France are to be employed, where needed, in assisting the farmers to get in their crops.
The Emperor of the French laid the foundation stone of a new building at Plombieres, intended to form the " Baths and Hotel Napoleon."
In two months and a half about 12,000 sheep were sent from Algiers to Marseilles ; and greater supplies would arrive in France but from the scarcity of shipping.
Vidocq was extremely averse from dying. An idea that no one would be found to follow him to the grave, oppressed him during his last days, and he therefore directed by will that a suit of clothes and a gold piece should be given to all the poor of his immediate neighbourhood who attended his boJy to the grave.
