Calcutta, October 2nd, 1857.
The Governor-General received a telegraphic message, with the gratifying announcement that Delhi is re-taken, and now entrusted in the hands of General Wilson.
The King and Queen, both being very old, are now prisoners ; but his two sons were gibbeted before the eyes of the British troops.
In the taking of Delhi about 900 of the British troops were killed.
General Neill was killed, and r General Sutherland is supposed to have died of his wounds. Also abcut 80 officers were killed.
The head-quarters of General Wilson is now at Eaukidas.
Great praise is due to General Havelock, who is now released from the harassing duties he has experienced, being blockaded in a fort, having under his charge about 7,000 Europeans — men, women, and children. At the time he was released he had only 15 days' provisions.
Sanguine hopes now prevail throughout India for the speedy termination of the war. Aid is pouring in from all quarters, and hundreds of troops are arriving daily.
The Golden Fleece had arrived with troops, after a 64 days' passage.
Two regiments of the British troops in a skirmish lost 18 officers each.
