New Zealand Provinces. WELLINGTON.
The following gentlemen have been elected Commissioners under the Sewerage and Drainage Act : — Messrs. Sutherland, Mason, Iloldsworth, M'Manaway, Brandon, G. Allen, Gawith, W.Allen, W. Fox, Schultze, Ashmore, and St. Hill. Messrs. Holdsworth, Carpenter, Edwards, Kelham, and Plimmer were elected members of the Provincial Council for the City of Wellington under the Council Enlargement Act. There was no contest, and one of the new members, Mr. Kelham, the Provincial Treasurer, instantly resigned his seat, his election having taken place without his knowledge or consent. At the election for two additional members for the Country districts, Messrs. M'Manaway and Reading were returned, beating Dr.* Curl. For the Hntt district, Mr. Milne was returned without opposition, as was also Mr. Masters for Greytown and Masterton. Mr. Hickson, one of the members for the city, has since resigned his scat. In an action brought by Caroline Marshall, a second-class passenger in the ship Libertas, against the Captain, for assault, battery, and false imprisonment, damages afcMOO, a verdict was given in favour of the defendant. An application to the Supreme Court was made to set aside the verdict recently given in the case of Campbell v. FitzGerald, and to enter a verdict for the plaintiff as in case of a nonsuit, on account of a variation between the declaration and the letter produced at the trial. The rale was made absolute to set aside the verdict. A monthly market which has been opened in Wellington has not been attended with the success it merits. A great outcry was long raised for a market, and the Independent says truly that now that one has been established, if it is not supported by the inhabitants of Wellington, they do not deserve the convenience which it affords. The schooner Ann Lloyd, of Auckland, in entering the Wairoa river, Poverty Bay, struck on the bar, and became a total wreck. The crew escaped with difficulty. The Wellington papers speak highly of the performances at Foley's Circus, which appears to liaje been (veil supported.
