DEATH.
On the 26th instant, at his residence in Nelson, after a lingering illness, Samuel Stephens, Esq., a Member of the House of Representatives, and of the Nelson Provincial Council. Mr. Stephens came out to New Zealand in the Nelson Preliminary Expedition, as the first officer of the Surveying Staff, and was, therefore, one of our very earliest settlers j and, from the many estimable qualities which he possessed, was highly and universally respected. By Mr. Stephens' death a vacancy has arisen in the representation of the Town of Nelson in the House of Representatives, and for the i District of Motueka in the Nelson Provincial Council.
