Local Intelligence.

New Country. — X highly important communication has been made to His Honor the Superintendent, within the last few days, by two natives. The statement which they give is, that a very large tract of rich country, hitherto unknown to Europeans, exists in the centre of. this island, and may "be reached either from Nelson or Canterbury on horseback. Improbable as this story at first appeared, there are several circumstances which give it an air of probability. The natives appear to he acting in perfect good faith, and for a very moderate consideration have undertaken to point the country out, and an arrangement has been made by which they are to start on their journey early next week, accompanied by Mr. Travers, who goes on the part of the Government to report upon the district. Markets. — There is a demand for wheat for the Melbourne market, and 10s. to 10s. 6d. a bushel has, we believe, been offered, but sellers are standing out for 11s., which iaJjhe highest price obtained since harvest. CTfts are selling at ss. Gd. to ss. 9d. a bushel; barley, Cs.

The German Band.— A company of German musicians, jfcssengers in the Lord Montgomery, from Melbourne, have been delighting us with their performances. A brass band is so much of a novelty in Nelson, that we do not wonder at the popularity these musicians have acquired here, and we have no doubt but that the concerts they have advertized will be well attended.
