/pAKAWAU COAL AND MINING JL ASSOCIATION. — Capital j£3,150.in Three Thousand Shares of £l is. each, with power to increase the capital by additional shares. Deposit Is. per share. Original Shareholders to have a preference in taking the additional shares. This Company has been formed for the purpose of purchasing and working the Coal Mines recently discovered at Pakawau, in the district of Massacre Bay, and for carrying on such other mining operations as may from time to time be deemed advantageous for the Company. Samples of the Coal from Pakawau have been submitted to chemical analysis, and have been tested by Blacksmiths and other competent judges; and, on comparison with Coal from the Newcastle mines in Australia, and with specimens of Coal from other parts of New Zealand, it has been pronounced to be applicable to every economical and manufacturing purpose, and superior in quality to any hitherto discovered in the British Colonies in the Pacific. It is of n blick colour, with bright metallic lustre, is difficultly frangible, produces little dust in working and docs not soil, burns with considerable heat and with a clear and persistent flame, is entirely free from sulphureous and other noxious vapours, produces little smoke and a. very small proportion of ashes, yields a large quantity of gas and tar, and affords coke of excellent quality. So far as has been hitherto ascertained, the field is of considerable extent, and presents great facilities for working. The promoters of the Company conceive it to be of the utmost importance to the interests of the Colony, that such a source of wealth should at once be made available, and the more particularly so, as there is every probability that Steam communication will shortly be established, not only between the various settlements of New Zealand, but also between New Zealand and the neighbouring Australian colonies. The Company will be deemed to be established so soon as 2,000 shares have been subscribed for, after which, immediate steps will be taken to obtain accurate surveys of, and reports upon, the coal beds ; so that the most approved practical and economical plans may be applied for winning and working them, and for otherwise carrying out the objects of the Company. The affairs of the Company will be under the management of a board of Directors, Secretary, Auditors, Treasurer, and Solicitors, elected in the usual manner. The liability of the Shareholders will be limited to the actual amount of their respective shares. •- •. As it is desirable that no delay should take place in carrying out so important an undertaking, persons desirous of taking shares are requested to make immediate application for the same to the Secretary or Treasurer, at whose respective offices share lists are now open. Written applications for shares (accompanied by the deposit of is. per share) may be made in the form given below, and addressed to the Secretary or Treasurer. (Form of application for shares.)
