Civilization. — Civilization, like a noble river, took its rise among the barren mountains — a little spring of usefulness ; for many centuries it has oeen swelling in size; it still widens and extends its limits, and will pursue its course until it reaches the ocean of man's perfection. Limjs. — To save constant cleaning of spare bits, stirrup- iorns, or anything made of steel or 'iron, some persons may not know, if a box or 'small tub of powdered lime is kept in the sad-die-room, and such things are buried in it, they will keep, it may be said, for ever, without care, Or getting rusty. A Philosophical Inference. — A French writer, perceiving that when parliament was sitting, the accounts in the newspapers of "Horrible Murders," "Daring Robberies," and " Savage Assaults," were much less numerous than at other times, and not knowing that the long reports of the parliamentary proceedings left little room for other matter, arrived at the following philosophical conclusion: — '[Such is the respect of the English for their parliament, that when it is sitting, crimes are extremely rare; but as soon as it rises, the papers are filled with the most horrible atrocities." Filial Affection Rewarded. — A strong remonstrance having been made by the officers to Captain Griffith, against a young gentleman of the quarter— deck, in the " Gibraltar," who was supposed to have acted in a manner unbecoming his character as an officer and a gentleman, the captain discovered that this young man was in the constant habit of remitting his pay, whenever he received it, to bis aged and helpless parents: upon this discovery the captain remarked, " that a boy who possessed this virtue could not be radically bad." He took the young man under his own immediate eye, and gradually formed him into a good setman and an honourable character.
