WELLINGTON.

We have received Spectators to the 11th instant, but no Independents have reached us later than the 28th of March, and was it not that we have seen copies elsewhere, we might suppose our contemporary to be defunct. We should really be glad if the proprietor of the Independent would post their papers for us as soon as published, for we almost invariably receive Spectators of a later date* The Petrel was lost on the Ist instant off Waikanai, having been caught suddenly in a gale of wind, and before she could reach the shelter of Kapiti she foundered, and the two men on board were both drowned. The schooner Rose was in great danger of being driven on shore in Wellington harbour on the same, day, from not having sufficient ground tackle, and was only saved by the great exertions of Captain Reid, of the Minerva, who, at great personal risk, conveyed an anchor on board the schooner just in time to save her. The schooner Queen, from the south-west coast of this island, reports large quantities of wreck, of an apparantly old vessel of American build, being washed on shore in Jackson's Bay. Dr. Dorset has given notice of an intended action for libel against the Spectator, arising out of the nominee squabbles. It is reported that Mr. Duppa was unsuccessful at the Aglionby races, in the Hutt, but we have not learnt the particulars. The latest retail prices given in the papers are, flour £16 per ton ; bread 2d. per lb. ; beef and mutton 6d. to 7d. ; pork sd. to 6d. ; fresh butter Is. ; salt do. Is. 4d. ; potatoes £4 per ton.
