CORRESPONDENCE.
To the Editor qf the Nelson Examiner.
Sir— The insertion of the following letter will, I trust, not be refused in your columns, inasmuch as the subject referred to involves the character of my vessel as a good and efficient craft. By reference to the Wellington Independent, dated July 29th, under the conspicuous head of "Taranaki," the following misstatementß are made by an anonymous correspondent, concerning the schooner Mary Ann, which was driven ashore at that place : — " At the time, a gale of wind was blowing from the north-west, and it was found that the Mary Ann, being a bad beater, would not be able to clear the rocks." In reply to these statements, I assert that the wind was well from the westward at the time, and the vessel had sufficient sea room to clear the rocks alluded to, without either difficulty or risk, if the person who had charge of the vessel at the time had summoned either ordinary resolution or ordinary skill to the emergency. The pretence that she was " a bad beater" is at once an ungenerous and deceptive assertion. Her " beating qualities " would have carried her safely into the clear sea way to Sydney had she been tried. I here produce the following signatures in corroboration of the truth of my statements, and thus leave the subject in your hands. William M'Kenzie, owner, Joseph Hall, seaman, John Crocker, seaman, William Robinson X his mark.
