LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

■ A singular circumstance occurred on Sunday last as the pilot boat was on her way out to put pilots on board the Mandarin and Christiana. One of the men, standing in the fore part of the boat, was rather astonished by a large shark about twelve feet long leaping out of the water and endeavouring to seize a small telescope he held in his hand, and which it knocked down and broke. If one of the sails had not offered some obstruction, this unwelcome visitor would have dropped plump into the boat,* in which case, some hard fighting must have ensued. It is supposed the shark was attracted by the brass mounting of the telescope glittering in the sun. The barque Christiana arrived on Sunday last, having three hundred sheep on board, from Sydney. The whole were stowed on deck, and bo little did they suffer by the passage, that only one died. Considering

that the voyage was a, tedious one of eighteen days, die shipper may esteem himself fortunate. '

The remainder of the cattle imported by the Messrs. Iralay of Twofold Bay, was sold by auction on Tuesday last. Working bullocks met a ready sale at an average of £15 each, steers, £12, and a few horses about £25. We believe the agent is perfectly satisfied with the result, and we hope soon to witness further arrivals.

Messrs. Drake and Bishop, accompanied by their Maori guide, returned last evening from a successful journey to the Wairau bj the Pelorus and Kaituna valleys. They re port favourably of the route.
