BENEFIT SOCIETY.

A public meeting was held on Wednesday evening laat in front of the Examiner Office, for the puipose of determining the best means of carrying into effect a series of resolutions passed at a meeting held on board the Mary Anne, having for their object the establishment of a Benefit Society or Friendly Association in this settlement. Captain Wakefield, R.N., in the chair. The Chairman briefly stated the objects for which they were assembled, and requested Mr. Young, as chairman of the committee appointed on board the Mary Anne, to inform the meeting of what had already been done. Mr. Young then read the resolutions above alluded to (which have already appeared as an advertisement in this paper); and (after stating that the committee of which he had the honour to be chairman had drawn up a code of laws, such as appeared to them to be best suited for the regulation of the proposed association) resigned, in the name of the committee, the official duties with which they had been intrusted. Mr. Tuckett the.n read the first resolution :—: — " That this meeting approves of the resolutions passed at the meeting held on board the Mary Anne;, and is fully convinced of the importance of instituting societies for the purpose of avoiding pauperism, and the dependent feeling which is engendered by its contemplation." i He gave this resolution his hearty concurrence, and was fully convinced of the importance of the objects to attain which the meeting had been called. . Mr. Kerr seconded the resolution ; which was put and carried. Mr. Richardson moved the second resolution :—: — " That a committee, with power to add to their number, and to consist for the present of the following individuals, be now appointed for the purpose of examining the resolutions drawn ' up by the committee appointed on board the Mary Anne, and of carrying into effect the intentions of that committee — Boddington, Mr. M'Shane, Mr. Dobeon, Mr. Richardson, Mr. Greaves," Mr. Spence, Mr. Kerr, Mr. Tuckett, Mr. Monro, Dr. Wakefield, Captain Macrea, Mr. Young, Mr." Macpheraon, Mr. Mr. Macrea seconded the resolution. It was then put and carried. Dr. Monro then moved that Captain Wakefield be requested to act as president to the society. Seconded by Mr. Budge. — Carried. Mr. Richardson moved that Mr. Tuckett be requested to act as treasurer. Seconded by Mr. Jenkins. — Carried. Mr. Young moved that Mr. Elliott be requested to act as honorary secretary. Seconded by Mr. Kerr. — Carried. Mr. Young moved "a vote of thanks to Mr. Elliott for his disinterested support of the proposed association, not only in the sacrifice of his time on board the Mary Anne, but for his liberality in giving up a considerable portion of the columns of the Examiner for advertisements, and printing the placards announcing this meeting, without any charge. Seconded by Mr. Richardson. — Carried. The Chairman then observed that there was but little occasion to say much ; their object was rather to do. It now only remained for those who were interested in the formation of this society to unite and support it. Captain Wakefield being about to retire, _Dr. Monro -was requested to take the chair, when a vote of thanks was given to the gallant captain for his kindness in presiding at the meeting. Captain Wakefield, in reply, -briefly said that -he wished to reside in an independent community ; and, believing the tendency of the proposed society would be to render this a community of that description, he gave it his hearty support. The thanks .of the meeting were then given to Mr. Young for his zealous assistance in the formation of the proposed society. _ Mr. Young, in returning thanks, assured his fellow-colonists that his best reward would be the satisfaction of finding that the endeavours of himself and of those who had acted with him, had been successful. It was. then agreed that the new committee should assemble in the Surveyors' Mess Room on the following evening.
