Moved by Mr. Young, and seconded by Mr. Valle : That it ii the opinion of this Committee that the principle of choosing names with a view to paying compliments to mdividuals, ought to bo repudiated. Moved by Mr. Graham, as an amendment, and seconded by Captain Wakkhkld : That tbe Committee proceed, in. toe first instance, to choose names to commemorate the career of Nelson, and that the succeeding names beat the discretion of tbe Committee. AT a Meeting of Emigrants on board tbe J&ary Anne, bound to New Zealand, held on Monday, January 10, 1842, for the purpose of considering and deciding upon the expediency of establishing in the settlement of Nelson a BENEFIT CLUB, or Friendly Association, William Cckling Young, Esq., in the Chair; The following Resolutions were proposed and carried : — - I.i Moved by Mr. G. Saundbbs ; seconded by Mr. R. Boddington : That, inasmuch as it is desirable at all times to provide for the cuualties and contingencies of the future out of the abundance or sufficiency of tbe present, as the habit of -selfreliance is destroyed when men are accustomed to look for assistance, in time of need, either from individual charity or public provision ; and as it appears to be especially the interest of persons belonging to the industrious classes, in case of their being disabled ior work by age, sickness, infirmity, or accident, or in tbe event of death, to secure for their fami. lies a maintenance out of a fund which they themselves have, contributed 'to raise ; this meeting is of opinion that the formation of a Society in the Colony of Nelson, founded on the principles of mutual aid and friendly combination, and having for its object the support of its members when at any time unable to follow their usual employment, and of their families in the event of their own death, would be a measure of public importance and utility. 3. Richakoson; seconded by Mr. Fullkk : That this meeting is desirous of recording its opinion that it would be desirable to form eventually, in connection with the projected Society, an Institution for the purpose of diff lining among its members Literary and Scientific Informs, tion, by means of a Beading Room, a Public Library, the, delivery of Public Lectures, and by buch other means as may hereafter appear expedient. 0.
