NELSON CRICKET

CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES OLD BOYS GAIN OUTRIGHT WIN WAKATU DEFEAT ATHLETIC Wicket and ground conditions on Saturday were good for the resumption of the Nelson City Cricket Association’s championship games, but the strong south-west wind was unpleasant although it was of considerable help to bowlers. At Trafalgar Park Wakatu secured a first innings win over Athletic, although at one stage Athletic seemed to have a good chance of overhauling Wakatu’s big score. In the other senior game, Old Boys Colts, who have had a very lean time, were strengthened by Challies and Hill and with Cull showing better form with the ball, they made a brave showing against the championship leaders, although they faded badly at the finish and suffered an outright defeat. No championship games will be played next Saturday.

OLD BOYS BEAT COLTS

T. RALFE SCORES 77 Old Boys’ Colts were beaten outright by Old Boys in a match completed at th 3 Park on Saturday. Resuming on the second day Botting went early and the position for Old Boys was not good as two batsmen were absent but Ralfe and A. Newman then treated the bowling very severely and added 102 in not much more than 40 minutes before Newman was out, well caught, in partly trying to guard his head from a full pitch. Ralfe went on to 77 which included 2 sixes and 10 fours. Stevens also batted freely his 35 including 2 sixes and 4 fours. Cull who had met with no success previously this season secured four for 74, making 4 for the match. Challies met with little success on the second day. Colts started very badly in the second innings, one down for 6 at tea reading three for 6 after the first over on resumption and then five for 11. Challies and Vaughan added 31 before the former was splendidly caught but the innings totalled only 73. Gray was again the most successful bowler, getting seven for 33 for the match. A feature of this match was the very fine out cricket and it is not too much to say that the- catching and fielding on both sides has not been excelled in a club match for a long time. Botting’s stumping of Cull was a most brilliant effort and Karsten’s running out of Vaughan a very bright one while the catches by Stevens, A. Newman, G. Hill, Challies and Griffin were all out of the ordinary among a lot of good ones. The ’keepers between them also, allowed only one ball past in the two innings.
