NELSON SKI CLUB
CHRISTMAS SOCIAL HELD The Nelson Ski Club held a Christmas party in the National Club rooms as the final social wind-up of the season, and about 60 members and friends were present. Each person had been requested to bring a small novelty parcel and the highlight of the evening was when these were distributed from the Christmas tree by none other than Father Christmas himself. He introduced himself by expressing his views on skiers and skiing. No one would have thought, when they heard him, that he is in real life a very enthusiastic skier, in the person of Mr Fred Irving. Early in the evening the photographic competition was judged. These photographs had been taken by Ski Club members during the winter and were divided into two classes —action and scenic. Results were: action, Mr D. Field 1, Mr R. Langbein 2; scenic, Miss J. Hepburn 1, Miss R. Johnson, 2. The judge, Mr Walter Jaray, congratulated the amateur and junior entrants, but said he was disappointed there had been so few entrie s from the more experienced and senior members of the club. During the evening, and interspersed between novelty dances, Mr Jorxnson sang two solos “I’ll Walk Beside You,” and “Jealousy” and Lieut. A. K. Griffith, R.N.Z.N.V.R., told some pidgin English tales of Pacific natives who saw mountains for the first time. Both these items were much appreciated. Musical chairs, forfeit dances, a battle fleet dance, and games filled the time enjoyably and the party closed not long after supper. The club captain, Mr W. Mclntosh, who was master of ceremonies, mentioned that the party was the last social meeting of the Ski Club until the beginning of next season, which would be sometime in May of next year.
