ESSENTIAL INDUSTRIES
ANOTHER CONTROL LIFTED Wellington, Nov. 29. The lifting of a further control measure was announced by Mr McLagan, Minister of National Service. Employers in essential industries will no longer be required to obtain consent before engaging labour, provided that they notify any engagements to the manpower officer within 48 hours. The effect of relaxation is that prior consent to engagements of labour will henceforth be required only in the case of non-essential undertakings, and even then only in the case of single women aged 18 to 30 years and men aged 18 to 45 years, other than returned servicemen. The Minister said that target dates had been announced for the lifting of various remaining controls and he was anxious to see all remaining essential industries reach a point by those dates, at which they will no longer depend on manpower controls to secure staff.—P.A.
