STILL NO SETTLEMENT

WELLINGTON TRAMWAY DISPUTE Wellington, This Day. No negotiations between the parties have yet taken place for settlement of the Wellington tramway dispute, and unless some agreement is reached by noon next Tuesday there will be another one-day strike next Wednesday, the tramwaymen have decided. The.e appears little likelihood of the legal position being clarified within the week. The tramways committee contends that the war loading bonus was rightly suspended on Ist October; the union contends that that provision in their award should continue in force till the old award (which formally expired on Ist October) is superseded by a new award.

The union is also demanding special transport facilities for early workers not provided for in the award. A series of delays has delayed the discussions between the council’s and the union’s assessors concerning the new award, and it may be weeks, possibly months, before this process can be carried to formal conciliation.
