MOTUEKA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Mrs Cowin presided over a good attendance at the November meeting of the Institute, held in St. Thomas’s Hall recently. The motto was “Pay as you go,—if you can’t, don’t go!” Included in the business of the meeting was an interesting report by Mrs Goodman of a meeting addressed by Miss Taylor, of the Nelson Hospital. Mrs Price was appointed the Institute’s representative on the Hospital Committee. A collection was made of small jars of jam, to be sent to the Hospital visitor, Mrs Burn, for distribution to patients. The afternoon tea was served by Mrs Wright and helpers. During the afternoon Mrs Goodman demonstrated how to produce a most useful article from waste material by making a woollen floor mop from old hand-knitted woollens, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs J. Boyce entertained the gathering with a vocal item, which was much appreciated and applauded. The Roll Call, “Sing, say, or sixpence pay” provided further entertainment with a series of brief items by members. A “Mystery Parcel” was won by Mrs J. Boyce. Mrs R. P. Cook, a visitor, judged the flower competitions, and was thanked for her co-operation. The results of the competitions were as follows: Best bloom, Mrs Brown 1, Mrs Cowin 2; best head, Mrs Cowin 1, Mrs Richards 2; best spray, Mrs Starnes 1, Mrs Richards 2; collection of 6 roses, Mrs Richards 1, Mrs Starnes 2; bowl of flowers, Mrs Richards 1, Mrs Starnes 2.
