TENSION EASED
PALESTINE COASTAL AREA
LANDING OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS JEWS RESIST SEARCH Jerusalem, Nov. 27 Tension has subsided slightly in the Palestine coastal area, says a correspondent of the Associated Press. The British lifted the cordon round settlements in the Givath Haim area and the troops are withdrawing to their camps. The Jewish National Council has ordered a 30 minutes’ stoppage of work throughout the Jewish sectors, of Palestine to-morrow “as a token of mourning and respect lor those who died for the right of Jews to bring their brethren to Palestine and defend their lives.” The death roll as a result of the disturbances for the past few days is reported to be nine. An earlier message stated that six Jews were killed and more than 80 were injured, many seriously, in daylong clashes between British troops and police and Jewish settlers as the British carried out a search of five settlements north of Tel Aviv; in face of strong resistance, reports Reuter’s Jerusalem correspondent. The British casualties are not yet known.
The clashes were part of a train of events resulting from the landing of a party of illegal immigrants, Jewish resistance to the British search, and an attack by terrorists on two coastguard stations.
