MALAYAN RUBBER INDUSTRY
REHABILITATION PLAN DRAWN UP Sept. 9. One of Malaya’s greatest rubber experts, Mr R. O. Jenkins, while imprisoned in Changi Camp, drew up a blue print for the rehabilitation of the Malayan rubber industry, reports the “Daily Mail” Singapore correspondent. Mr Jenkins was head of a committee formed at Changi Prison on the suggestion of the former Governor of Singapore, Sir Shenton Thomas. soon after the fall of Singapore, to get the rubber industry working again after the Allies recaptured Singapore. The plan, which was drawn up at the risk of torture or death, allows that the Japanese cut out 100,000 to 150,000 acres of rubber trees for foodgrowing purposes. Twenty-five million pounds will be required to restore the lost acres. Mr Jenkins proposes that the British Government meet the cost necessary to get the industry in full production. He believes banks and financial concerns are too scared of synthetic rubber to risk the money
