“SNAKE GULLY”

(To the Editor) Sir, —In a report of the Town Board meeting the locality known locally as “Snake Gully” is referred to as “Doctor’s Hollow.” I don’t know why. It is true that it is more of a hollow than a gully, but I am an old resident of Takaka and I have never heard of it being called “Doctor’s Hollow” before. I know that two Takaka doctors live near the “Hollow” but neither of them owns an inch of the ground which comprises it which is owned by two local farmers. I don’t know how the name “Snake Gully” originated but it probably dates back to the early days. The early • settlers and miners liked calling hollows gullies, and as we have “Bedstead Gully.” “Misery Gully,” “Maori Gully.” etc., all of them no doubt, named after some incident or other which suggested the title. Though, like most of* the others, the Wend of Snake Gully is perhaps lost, we, nevertheless hope that the name, dear alike! to Australians and New Zealanders, will be retained.—l am etc. “DAD AND DAVE.” Takaka. sth September.
