STUDY OF RUAPEHU

NO EARTHQUAKE TREMORS

Wellington, This Day. Mr H. Fyfe, of the Geological Survey Department has returned after spending three weeks studying Ruapehu. He says he never felt a single earthquake tremor. While explosive outbursts caused air blasts which rattled windows and gave the impression of an earthquake were no seismograph records of any shocks. . There had also been reports of red hot rocks being ejected, but he saw nothing of the kind, nor any red hot lava in the crater, the surface of which now consists of a mass of rubble from rock shot to pieces by explosi. „■ outbursts. Hot rocks had been ejected but no red hot rocks :j his knowledge. He did no think there was any possibility of an overflow of lava. The surface of the crater was now an average of 80 feet below the lowest part of the rim. Commenting o n reports of glowing clouds at night Mr Fyfe said these were definitely not due to glare from lava, but to electrical effects caused b the friction of steam and ash.—P.A.
